Ger-Nis Culinary & Herb Center, located in Park Slope, Brooklyn is a hands on recreational and educational culinary center with an emphasis on local, organic, sustainable and fairly traded foods. The culinary center offers a wide variety of hands on education and culinary classes for children and adults as well as culinary services and events space. We are aiming to give our community the opportunity to learn more about food and cook with great ease and joy while supporting good healthy habits for ourselves and the planet! We want to make sure our interns get out as much as they put in, if not more, so we are making sure we keep them focused on what they want to learn more of. We have decided to pair each internship with specific sectors of Ger-Nis' growing business and allow greater focus on expanding each category while giving interns the opportunities to expand the skills they need. *Please note all internships and jobs here at Ger-Nis, including the job of the managing director include, basic office work, social media, paperwork, garbage, dishes and grunt work, that is life and we want people who understand this.
Blogging Intern: This intern will not only help us maintain on our current blogs, but will be a pivotal member in creating a new (top secret) blog, focusing in food and recipes for the Ger-Nis Culinary & Herb Center. Ideal candidates would have word press experience, in design, photoshop or adobe CS5 as well as excellent writing skills, an editing eye, plus a keen interest in food photography and food styling. This internship is perfect for someone trying to delve deeper into the food blogging world and learn "voice" style blog writing as well as design and layout! Perfect for a future or present blogger!
Marketing & PR Intern: This intern will be in the thick of our marketing and PR campaigns helping us with our quest to grow our name as a leader in sustainable food education & events in Brooklyn. This internship will have an opportunity to help us market the entire list of our services as well as play a key role in helping us achieve targeted local and national publicity. The ideal candidate should have some basic experience in marketing and PR in the food world and have a finger on the pulse of what is both hot now and what will be. Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as e-mail blasting experience, the ability to write in our voice, essential. This intern will learn the ins and outs of PR in the food world, be introduced to multiple members of media and be a central liaison for outside events for Ger-Nis.
Culinary Kitchen Intern: This internship is all about learning to cook better in a working culinary classroom as well as learning the ropes of what it takes to manage the entire system behind it. The intern will help us with prep for our classes and events as well as cooking for some of our photo shoots, blogs etc. The intern also gets experience in helping us run the "office" side of the kitchen with ordering, inventories, shrink, as well as overall class management organization. Ideal candidate will have excellent kitchen skills and experience in a working kitchen and/or culinary school. Be proficient in excel and Microsoft word. In design skills a plus.
Recipe Writing & Editing Intern: A perfect internship for someone wishing to enter the field of cookbook editing or the food publishing world in general. With over 30+ new recipes created here weekly at Ger-Nis we are looking for help with editing and basic writing. This internship requires excellent writing and grammar skills as well as extreme attention to detail and pattern following. The intern will also need to have experience in wordpress and have a good grasp of cooking and food technique. The internship will also have the opportunity in editing and writing other food jobs at Ger-Nis, The Herb Blurbs, Sustenance, class, and event write-ups.
Social Media Intern: Modern times call for modern measures, this internship is all about social media and helping us continue to move into the realm of social media marketing. The candidate will need to have exceptional, facebook, twitter, tumbler, you tube and hootesuite skills. The internship will focus on helping us achieve optimal results with our online social campaigns and the intern will work closely with the marketing department to achieve this. This internship can be in conjunction with another.
Summer Social Club Intern: This internship is geared towards organizing our summer social club launching its second year June 1st. The intern will work directly with the managing director in coordinating social clubs, as well as our local road trippin' experiences and hosting many of our experiences over the summer. The qualified candidate will have experience and knowledge with local establishments and coordination of events. PAID Culinary Class and Event Assisting: In addition to the above internships, the interns will have first opportunity for paid shifts assisting culinary instructors with classes and events as well as organizing prep work in the kitchen prior to classes and preparing handouts and all other materials needed for classes. They will set up according to instructor and event preferences and clean up according to procedures. Culinary class and events assistants will get to work with some of Brooklyn's best chefs and artisans as well as farmers and also participate in many of our events that take place in our center. We have quite a few amazing events coming up this spring and summer and are in need of revved up culinary folks! This is an exciting opportunity for the right hard working person who wants to learn more about the food world and network and grow as a sustainable foodie!
All interns will automatically be eligible for paid shifts for special events, classes, and general help. Interns can take any class at Ger-Nis for free and received 25% off for their friends, eat and help cook amazing lunches, gets lots of herbs and other food stuff to take home. Interns will also have access to offsite events and get big discounts on all of our high-end events.
Spring Internships will begin on the 2nd of April and will go through July 30th , applications due by March 28th!

Culinary Class & Events Assistant Manager –Part Time (24 hours per week)
The culinary class and events assistant manager will assist in the daily operations of our culinary center. This is a very unique entry-level position, and the candidate will gain experience in all operations of the culinary center. The culinary assistant will report to the culinary center director as well as the managing director of Ger-Nis. Tasks and duties include helping us manage our event program, culinary classes, children's summer cooking programs, community outreach, marketing, the whole gamut. We're looking for someone special who has a passion for food and experience in the food and culinary world. Applicant must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress, Adobe Illustrator, be very organized, and have a talent for writing and editing. This is a part-time position, pay rate is $12.50/hr. Applications accepted until April 28th, start date is beginning of April.
Entry Level Staff Writer-Part Time
If you crave a place where you can learn to write fun & whimsically about food, this could be your dream job. We're bringing a fresh, unique voice to the food world with a plethora of projects and daily writing tasks and we want to work with an experienced editor and writer who is looking to join our team and help us with our daily writing needs as well as help us develop our voice even further into the sustainable food world. We are looking for writers to help with all forms of our writing and editing, from our fun & unique class description, to our online magazine, The Herb Blurbs, to many of our newsletters, recipe headlines and marketing materials as well as press releases and an upcoming television show for qualified candidates. The staff writer would also be editing the monthly blog written by our founder Nissa Pierson, Sustenance, A Food & Culture Blog. We will also like to have the staff writer handle many of our facebook and twitter posts, which means you must be completely fluent in all of the standard online communications. If you have an existing base of fans/followers on any or all of the leading platforms, that's a big plus.
We are looking for a sales person to work on a commission base on selling our services, this includes but is not limited to studio rentals, instructor and events finder's fees, recipe development, local road tripping, supper clubs, private classes and corporate training events. We have a large amount of creative ideas and need the right person who is motivated enough to capture the audience. This position is not located in the office, however we can easily provide a full time desk in return for part time work also including an excellent commission structure of pay based on results. The ideal candidate will be well connected and a true go getter!
