Monsanto and Kraft aren't the only big players in our food system - the food supply chain is increasingly being influenced by powerful agricultural cooperatives. The City Pages, in Minneapolis, recently detailed the activities of a group called Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) and their Dairy Termination Program - or "Whole Herd Buyout". Between 2003 - 2010, over 500,000 dairy cows have been slaughtered.

In short, CWT has been fixing milk prices by organizing the slaughter of milking cows and thereby consolidating the clout of powerful cooperatives at the expense of small farmers.
