THE FIRST ANNUAL SLOW FOOD NYC “SLOW DRINK WEEK” October 27 – November 2, 2008 Click here for updated event info. On Monday, October 27th experience the Great Cocktail Renaissance first hand at Snail of Approval winning Pegu Club. To kick-off “Slow Drink Week”, Pegu Club owner, Audrey Saunders will host a cocktail reception from 6pm to 8pm featuring artisanally-crafted, “slow” cocktails accompanied by Chef Philip Kirschen-Clark’s seasonally inspired passed hors d’oeuvres. Legendary mixologists and authors Dale De Groff, David Wondrich, and Gary Regan will compete in an incendiary “Blue Blazer Mix-off.” Each will prepare a flaming Blue Blazer variant and will be graded on craftsmanship, of course, and on bartenderly showmanship and one-upsmanship. During the 19th century, a uniquely American phenomenon, the “cock-tail”, was nurtured to world appreciation by pioneering mixologist “Professor” Jerry Thomas. Professor Thomas laid the foundation of modern mixology, mixing and pouring around the nation and here in New York City (at the Metropolitan Hotel on Broadway between 21st and 22nd Streets). Today, we are in the midst of a Great Cocktail Renaissance, lead by latter day disciples of the Professor.“Slow” cocktails, displaying true craftsmanship, sustainably produced spirits, and unique, house-made and local ingredients, are available at an increasing number of bars and restaurants. The Professor would be proud. This very special event will launch “Slow Drink Week”, during which participating bars and restaurants will offer their own, unique “slow” cocktails. Proceeds from the “Slow Drink Week” launch reception at Pegu Club, and from the “slow” cocktails offered by participating bars and restaurants during “Slow Drink Week” will benefit the Slow Food NYC Harvest Time Program, including Good Food Education, a Youth Farmstand, and Edible Schoolyards at schools in East Harlem and Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
