Great Performances started in 1979 as Great Performances, Artists as Waitresses, a staffing firm that provided "day jobs" for women in the arts. They have grown into one of the city's top catering and food service management firms, responsible for BAMCafé at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sotheby's, The Plaza Hotel, and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, among others. Great Performances also has their own Mae Mae Café where they serve many seasonal specialties.
They have also become top supporters of local, sustainable agriculture, featuring the products of Hudson Valley farms on their menus. And Great Performances has gone one step further: After a long search, they have purchased the 60-acre Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook, NY, where they raise organic fruits and vegetables that appear on their event tables within 36-48 hours of being picked. The farm is also host to the Sylvia Center, a not-for-profit that brings fresh food and the farm experience to at-risk children.
