The Food Almanac 2020: Rising to the Challenges of Climate Change

  • Project Farmhouse 76 East 13th St New York, NY 10003 (map)

Since 1818, the Farmers' Almanac has provided uncannily accurate weather predictions that inform farmers’ planting, harvesting, and day-to-day living. In 2020, Slow Food New York City - inspired by the “Farmers’ Almanac” - is hosting the 10th Annual Food Almanac, a singular opportunity for food-active individuals to be informed and to consider food and farming policy challenges, opportunities, and action in the year ahead.

Amidst increasing environmental pressures from climate change and economic pressures of newly introduced state legislation, New York farmers face unprecedented, existential threats to their work at the foundation of our food system. Yet, as global temperatures and sea levels continue to rise, producers - from farmers to fisherfolk - are rising to the challenge and finding opportunities for innovation along the food chain. Join Slow Food NYC at the 10th anniversary of the Food Almanac to explore the ways in which New York growers are adapting to the threats of climate change and growing solutions, from new crop varieties to climate-resilient farming.

During the event you'll hear from our expert panelists, while enjoying seasonal sip and snacks.

Panelists Include:

Linda LaViolette, New York Department of Agriculture & Markets

Zaid Kurdieh, Norwich Meadows Farm

Larry Tse, Dig Inn Farm

Moderated by Naama Tamir, Owner of Lighthouse and Slow Food NYC's 2019 Snailblazer
