Thank You for Slowing Down at The Marshal

After a multiple-year hiatus, Slow Food NYC was thrilled to bring back our annual in-person fundraiser event, the “Slow Down” to raise funds for our Urban Harvest Farm at Ujima in East New York. The event took place on October 3rd at The Marshal in Manhattan and even the heavy rainstorm couldn’t keep people away. The dining room was packed and brave Slow Food supporters cozied up under blankets and heat lamps in the outdoor dining area in addition to gathering inside for a convivial celebration. Thank you to all who came out to support.

The Marshal is a local restaurant recognized by Slow Food NYC’s Snail of Approval program.

A four-course wine pairing was generously donated by Opici Wines & Spirits their representatives taking time to introduce each wine—including details about the grapes, terroir, and sustainable production. Their wine selections and in-depth expertise greatly enhanced the dinner experience, and we’re grateful for everything Opici is doing to promote sustainability in the wine industry.

The evening included a raffle with gift certificates from a selection of beloved New York City food establishments. A big thank you to them for donating raffle prizes, supporting Slow Food NYC’s ethos, and delighting the winners. Please be sure to visit their websites and say hello if you are in their respective neighborhoods sometime soon:

  • The Marshal — Our host for the evening, The Marshal features a seasonal farm-to-table menu of locally-sourced goodness.

  • Marlow & Sons — A cozy Williamsburg spot featuring dinner with a farm-fresh emphasis, plus wine & cocktails.

  • Amali NYC — Sustainable farm-to-table Mediterranean restaurant emphasizing Greek and Italian cuisine in East Midtown with an award-winning wine list.

  • Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks — Legendary East Village bookstore offering out-of-print & antiquarian cookbooks since 1997.

  • The Brooklyn Kitchen — New York's best recreational cooking school that aims to teach people how to cook like grown-ups, and have fun doing it.

  • T Salon — Dedicated to delivering the finest gourmet-blended, organic, sustainable teas.

In all, we raised more than $4,500 to support Slow Food NYC’s mission of providing good, clean and fair food to all New Yorkers. These funds are vital to continuing the work behind this mission including Urban Harvest Farm at Ujima in East New York, which has distributed thousands of pounds of food to the surrounding community over the past several years alone. Proceeds from this event directly support this work and other projects such as our Snail of Approval program.

Attendees at the 2022 “Slow Down” event at The Marshal chose an appetizer, entree, and dessert of their choice from a good, clean, and fair menu designed for all dietary needs.

The event would not have been possible without the generous support of Chef Charlie Marshall, who also happens to serve on the Slow Food NYC board. He went above and beyond donating food, labor, and space to help further our mission and provide a convivial evening of delicious food for our members and supporters.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, donated, and supported this year’s “Slow Down” event, and we can’t wait for the next one. If you weren’t able to attend and would like to get involved, we are currently accepting nominations (deadline on Dec. 7, 2022) for new board members to fill a few open leadership roles starting in early 2023 and will be hosting an annual meeting open to our community in November. We hope to see you there.
